Learning English will help you in many ways. As English is now the internationally recognised language for aviation, business, computing, internet, travel etc., learning the English language will help you when you travel, look for jobs overseas or with national companies with international connections, exchanging information, searching and learning on the internet, conducting business and for pure entertainment in the music and movie industries.

MANAGING YOUR LEARNING = YOUR SUCCESS!

How you will manage learning English will very much depend on your motivation, what type of learner you are and how much time you spend on learning English:

Your Motivation!
Why are you learning English?
How important is learning English for you?
What benefits will you gain by learning the English language?

If you do not have the motivation or desire to learn, then the best courses and information in the world are not going to help you and you will be wasting your time and money.

However, if you are truly motivated to learning the English language – you will succeed!

Look at this list of reasons for learning English.  How many of these are your reasons?
I like the English language.
I like the sound of English.
I like learning English.
I’m learning English to increase my work opportunities.
I’m learning  English because I have an English boyfriend/girlfriend/partner.
I want to travel and learning English will help me enjoy travelling more.
I love learning languages and English is an international language.
I use the internet a lot and learning English will help my searches.
Learning English will mean I dont need to use subtitles when watching movies.
I love listening to music so learning English will help me understand more.

The more reasons you have for learning English the more you will succeed.

Here is another list of reasons for learning English:
I have to learn English because it is on the school curriculum.
I’m learning English because my boss said I have to learn to keep my job.
My partner wants to/has to move to an English-speaking country.  I don’t.
My parents are making me learn English.

These types of reasons will prevent you learning English because it is not something you really want to do.

The more positive your reasons are for learning English the more you will succeed!

Be Specific!

Instead of saying ” I want to learn English”  say WHY and WHEN you will learn it by.

“I want to learn how to read a menu and order food for my holiday in three months time.”

“I would like to be able to say basic English greetings to my girlfriend’s parents when we visit them next year.”

“I need to learn the vocabulary for construction work so I can apply for jobs in America next month.”

What type of learner are you?
There is a lot of information about learning types and learning styles. You might be a person who prefers to learn orally (by listening to others speaking English), visually (you need to see and read examples of written English or kinaesthetically/practical (you need to be doing exercises to help you to learn.) Sometimes you can be a mixture of all three. You may be strongly left-brained (logicial thinking) or right-brained (creative thinking) or a mixture of the two.

Knowing your learning style will help you to chose the right study methods for you so that your learning of the English language will be faster and more enjoyable for you.

TIME

How much time can you spend learning English?
 – Are you going to be learning the English language full-time or part-time?
 – What other commitments do you have that will hinder your learning?
Did you know that 20 minutes of study per day is much better than a single two hour study session per week? Can you committ to 20 minutes per day to learning English?

QUALITY

Quality of Learning English
Learn correctly the first time!  Many people spend years learning English and still make mistakes, especially with pronunciation, using words incorrectly and misspelling words. This is not quality learning as you will have to correct all these mistakes later which is much harder to undo than learning English correctly the first time.

PRACTICE

Just like any skill you are learning – the more you practice the more you will learn!
